Upcycling

I have always been a fan of reinventing my clothes. Now it’s called upcycling to me it’s just common sense. If you have a garment which fits you perfectly but looks a bit dated or you’re a little bored with it don’t throw it away. Update it, change it, reinvent it. My favourite jacket for over 10 years was a faded brown velvet box jacket. It fitted me perfectly had a small mandarin collar and covered buttons. I updated it every few years by changing the buttons. In its last incarnation I bought the most gorgeous mother of pearl etched buttons. Unfortunately whilst on holiday in Lisbon I left my favourite jacket in a cafe, its still my favourite.  One day I will make a replacement.  I often buy tops I like in charity shops but sometimes the sleeves are too floaty for me so I unpick the seams narrow the sleeves or take them out completely. I have been upcycling a lot lately and with the arrival of my gorveous new granddaughter Evalyn (more on that in another post). She is very petite but long. Her sleepsuits fit her everywhere except in length where the footpart is too tight. This is where I come in. I took sleepsuits , cut off the feet added lace or binding  and a bit of applique and these will now fit her for a few more weeks.

I own two pairs of jeans,  one a pale dark blue, one mid blue. I was bored with the lighter ones decided to do something I hadn’t done for years. Dye them.
Many moons ago I had a fabric winter coat which started off pale pink and had three reincarnations as a lilac, purple and navy. This time I bought Dylon Wash and Dye Jeans Blue. They have come out a dark blue with grey tint but I am really impressed with how the colour came out. I used one bag for two pairs of jeans. Once I have finished  the dying and washed them through as per the instructions I do a normal clothes wash with clothes in the colour family I have just dyed.

It’s finished

It’s been another busy month and I didn’t get as much sewing done as I wanted but I did manage a fair bit of knitting. I knitted a cotton vest top and vintage dress for the new baby and the big news is that I completed Eldora. I really like the patterns and love the colours I have chosen, although I wasn’t such a fan of the sewing in of the ends. For once I have a top whose length is perfect for skirts. I really like the Cotton Glace and will be using it again when I try and finish Debbie Abrahams Mystery cushion from 2012.

Decision Made

As you saw, the patterns had been shortlisted and the winner is………… drum roll please……………Eldora from Rowan Magazine 55.
I am using Rowan Cotton Glace from my stash in different colours than suggested. I chose the colours randomly by writing down how many balls I needed by letter, opened the odd ball box and took the colours out on a first come first served basis. For once I didn’t over think it and just went with the flow.
It worked I am really enjoying the way the colours are coming together.  I am finding it very addictive in the same way as cross stitch and colourwork . It’s the colour and pattern changing that inspires me and keeps me going when I should stop. One thing I hadn’t noticed before starting to knit is that it has a few rows of stranded knitting. The only slightly frustrating pattern row is where you have to wind the yarn three times per stitch, which as I’m knitting it in the round seems to take forever. A mini downside is all the ends I’ll have to sew in. The photo shows one not quite finished pattern repeat

Windswept

image

As soon as I saw this book I wanted it. Windswept is a wonderful range of patterns in a range of Rowan yarns designed by Marie Wallins.
I am lucky enough to have yarn in my stash for some of the designs but I was lacking in enough Cocoon to knit  Dill the first design of the second row. I really want to knit this so I used my initiative and  remedied the problem by swapping some Tumble from my stash for the same number of balls in Cocoon. I decided on the chocolate brown as I feel it will be more versatile.

I like all bar three of these designs and want to knit the stranded work dress , sweater and cardigan. I may need to buy a couple of balls but am lucky enough to have most of it in my stash. It is hard deciding what to knit and too often I end up knitting something I quite like that I can wear for work,  but don’t wear much outside. These designs I would wear every where.

Too Much Choice

I have finally finished Santorini from Rowan magazine 53. I cheated slightly and didn’t knit the flower on the front as I intend to make fabric corsages from Rowan fabric and wear these with it.
Time to choose a new project and I am so torn , there are so many patterns I want to knit and 4 I have organised the yarn for. The problem is I keep changing my mind on which one to knit first.
The first of the four options is Eldorado from rowan magazine 55. You can follow my progress here. http://www.ravelry.com/projects/flickchickknits/eldora/photos like Santorini this is the cover knit. I will still be using Rowan Cotton Glace but these colours.

My second choice is Kiki from Kim Hargreaves amazing new book Honey. In my opinion this is her best book for a while and there’s a few in this I want to knit. Again Stash will be used and slightly different colours. The yarn the pattern calls for is the dreaded Kidsilk Haze which I have a love hate Relationship with. My progress can be found here. http://www.ravelry.com/projects/flickchickknits/kiki

The third of the four comes from this months Knit Today in which there are a few patterns I want to knit. I was very nearly tempted to subscribe as they have a great subscription offer but thought to myself I can’t cope with the amount of patterns I have so NO. As soon as I saw Clementine by Sarah Hatton I knew I had to knit it, in red. This one hasn’t made it to my project page yet.

The fourth is from Marie Wallins Windswept, which needs its own post, so more on that next time.

Follow the Arrow

I finished Ysoldas follow the arrow mystery knit a long a week or two after the deadline. I really enjoyed knitting this especially having one clue a week.
The result was lovely and if I ever get spare time and have knitted all my patterns I may knit another one.
I used The Natural Dye Studio Precious 4ply 100% silk. I am not normally a fan of silk but this was so soft and silky it was a real pleasure to knit with. I used most of the two skeins

Destashing First Quarter

Destashing is still going well but not as strongly as I want.
I have made Evalyns first cardigan using Rowan Baby Merino Silk. I only have a button to add. I really enjoy knitting with this yarn it’s one of those yarns that feels as if it’s knitting itself. The pattern is Sabrina from a Patons booklet.

I have 8 squares to knit for her blanket. I started off so well but as usual fall at the deadline. I have six weeks to finish it which sounds like plenty  oftime but I also have to knit six squares a week for the Rowan Mystery Afghan KAL. This I have fallen behind with, only managing 2 squares a week so far.  This week is a lace square so I should be catching up soon. I really like the Pure Wool Worsted. The colour range is fantastic and it knits properly. I can’t wait to knit some cables in it.

Sock Phase

I appear to be going through a sock knitting phase. I am still determined to lower my stash and after buying some lovely aran yarn from Rosies Moments I was determined to knit my daughter some socks with it. I decided to read lots of my sock books, I have one or two! Some of them were very similiar but one or two stood out for me. The first is Rowans Sock Knitting Workshop by Georgina Parks. It has really clear instructions and good guides to the heel shaping . I have knitted the basic pattern in Rowan Fine Art Sock yarn and am really pleased with the results. After digesting all this information from all sock knitting books I decided to try my hand at writing my own basic pattern. This is something I never thought I would do, design a pattern. As I have lots of small amounts of Aran weight yarn I decided to design in this weight first. It took a bit of trial and error to get the right length etc but I am pleased with the result and will be putting the pattern on Ravelry once I have written it out in electronic form. I used one skein of Rowan Fine Art Aran for a UK size 7 pair .
Edited to add link. Pattern is now live http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/jemma-3

I love the way the colours pool. Next on my to do list is to write one in sock weight yarn. I have also realised that I prefer the kl, sl1 for the heel flap.
I am still destashing and will post an update shortly

International Womens Day

This year the International Womens Day fell on March 8th. I spent the day at the lovely Liberty teaching a Learn to Sew class. One of the ladies mentioned it was International women’s day and that some feminists would say that learning to sew would set the movement back we had a good discussion about it inbetween the sewing.
When you think about it learning to sew is very empowering.  If you can make your own clothes and furnishings you are only reliant on the fabrics available to you. You will never be reliant on a high street buyer deciding what you will be wearing. You will always be able to make something for yourself to wear . You will be able repair, recycle and upcycle your clothes. The possibilities are endless. A favourite item of clothing that fits perfectly but is falling apart, can either be embellished to repair and refresh it or unpicked and used as a pattern to make another one. If you wanted to take it to another extreme you coukd weave your own fabric. Buy some plain fabric and print your own design on it. Never again willyou need to ask someone to sew a buttonon or hem a skirt or trousers.
How empowering is that?

It’s all going well

The yarn destash is continuing and as of today I have destashed the grand total of ..18810g. It is still quite a satisfying and almost therapeutic thing to do. The fabric won’t be as easy, but I am due a granddaughter at the end of June so lots will be used to make clothes for her. However I very much doubt that any will be sold or given away.
It doesn’t feel as if I’ve knitted much although I have. Zahras coat is complete I just need to sew the buttons on, still knitting Ysoldas follow my arrow shawl, knitted Evalyn a bonnet, two of my mystery blanket squares and a cowl for a swap.

Update buttons sewn on
