It’s still the same old story

As usual I have over extended myself and have dropped the ball. I need to have a good think and re-evaluate things. The vibrant sweater has been put on hold after finishing both the sleeves, as unfortunately I have a case of tennis elbow. The physio is working well but I still have to be a good patient and limit the amount of knitting or sewing I do. One doesn’t realise how much one uses these muscles until one does something and it hurts.

Sewing has been a little lax as well so next weekend I am planning to make a list of everything I need to do, both knitting and sewing and put it order of priority and pencil time to do it all in the calender. I actually think I’d get more done if I had to commute to work each day instead of my 20 minute walk.

Lovely yarn

As you will all know I love Alpaca yarns.  I am currently knitting the Vibrant Colourwork Sweater as shown in the last post and  am enjoying every stitch I am knitting.

Rowan Alpaca Colour is a real pleasure to knit with. It’s one of those yarns that just glides off the needles. I have already made one sleeve and have started the second one. The body with all its wondrous colourwork is calling me but I am remaining strong and knitting the sleeves first. I love this pattern and yarn

New Beginnings

As well as finishing lots of projects in August I joined a gym. I still can’t quite believe it but after talking about it for many years I am finally doing it. Not only have I joined, but I have used the gym and taken a class. I have discovered I am fitter than I thought I was but I cannot use a tread mill. It is rather frustrating, I mean it’s only walking. To  my surprise I am a natural on the cross trainer and bikes. I had an induction with the lovely Zoe who has given me great advice on which classes to take and how long to use each machine until I have my next session with her.  I am looking forward to using the gym at least twice a week and have my sights set on a few different classes. I am determined to keep it up.

On the crafting front I still have numerous sewing projects cut out ready to sew. I really need to get on with them or Harry and Evalyn will have outgrown them. On the knitting front I have started Hogwarts Express by Susan Ashcroft in the most gorgeous purple pink Yarn Hollow Tor Worsted Superwash, the shade name is violent violet. I do love the yarn and wanted to knit the pattern but the reason I am using the both now is because the lovely Harry did his usual of picking up the ball of wool, holding it to his face and saying ooo wool. Unfortunately he had been eating Dairylea and some got on the yarn, now even though I wiped it off I couldn’t really wash the yarn properly without it being made up. Well done Harry, good choice!

One of the projects I want to knit and have kitted up is the gorgeous Vibrant Colourwork Pullover from the new Vogue Knitting by Marie Wallin. I would really love to do it in the same colours as the pattern but I am determined not to add to my stash so am knitting it in slightly different colours. I will still be using the two main colours yellow and green, a slightly different green.

Luckily I did have the yarn except in slightly different colours. Orange will be replaced with red. I am really looking forward to knitting this in the fabulously wonderful and soft Rowan Alpaca Colour and Rowan Kid Classic. I plan on knitting this in the round up to the arms and will be knitting the arms first. I can’t wait to start knitting it

August

I can’t believe it’s September already. August has passed in a blur. I have been working fulltime and getting into a new sleep routine and doing lots of crafting. There are a lot of swap groups on Ravelry and I enjoy doing lots of swaps. One of the groups I am in decided to have a WIP finishing month and this proved to be the kick up the backside I needed.

I am desperate to start a new project but used some self control to not start one until I finished three WIPs I had. Although I didn’t start anything new I did start looking at new projects and putting the yarn together for a few. There is an endless stream of exciting and beautiful new patterns to inspire me and no matter how often I say , that’s it I’m not buying anymore books or magazines there is always another gorgeous design that entices me.

In August I finally finished my daughters neon socks from my own pattern

Knitted a shawl We are Stardust which I had a few issues with , definitely user error what did I expect knitting at 2am.

And I finally finished my mystery cushion 2012. I really enjoyed getting these finished. The only problem is that I now have a long list of projects to knit, mainly jumpers, when I really need a cardigan!

New Beginnings Week 1

Well I finally did it. I have left my role as a Rowan Design Consultant. I still love Rowan yarns and fabrics but it just is not possible to do the amount of work required with no help in the contracted hours. However I do have a new job which I love, It is working in a call centre, but is far from a normal call centre environment as it has such a great fun atmosphere and you are valued as a staff member. As I am working evenings I have my days to meet friends, look after Harry and craft. Strangely since I am no longer crafting for a living apart from the odd workshop I have done so much. In the week since I left I have made three tops, knitted one pattern repeat on a shawl, started a top for Harry and taught some one how to knit. Let’s hope this level of crafting continues.

The tops are made from a  Sew Girl  pattern I got free with the fabulous magazine Love Sewing Magazine. It is one of the simplest patterns I have used and I only have one tiny complaint. It leaves it up to you to place the pockets. I would prefer to have been told , luckily I placed them correctly

Evalyn

Evalyn blog 1It’s been a hectic month and amongst all the  things going on I was extremely lucky to become a nana again. My daughter Sarah gave birth to the mini version of her on 29th June at 09.14am. Evalyn Dorothy Frances Jones came into the world weighing a mere six pounds five ounces. She had a huge mop of dark hair and was so petite. A month on and she has started to fill out a little, She is a tiny thing but very long. Her hair is getting lighter and now she is the image of her mother when she was born. I got very emotional the first time I saw her after  she had morphed into her mother. It was so bizarre, it was as if I was holding my first baby girl all over again. She is a noisy little thing and likes to giggle and make noises when she moves in her sleep. She is a very welcome edition to the family.

Upcycling

I have always been a fan of reinventing my clothes. Now it’s called upcycling to me it’s just common sense. If you have a garment which fits you perfectly but looks a bit dated or you’re a little bored with it don’t throw it away. Update it, change it, reinvent it. My favourite jacket for over 10 years was a faded brown velvet box jacket. It fitted me perfectly had a small mandarin collar and covered buttons. I updated it every few years by changing the buttons. In its last incarnation I bought the most gorgeous mother of pearl etched buttons. Unfortunately whilst on holiday in Lisbon I left my favourite jacket in a cafe, its still my favourite.  One day I will make a replacement.  I often buy tops I like in charity shops but sometimes the sleeves are too floaty for me so I unpick the seams narrow the sleeves or take them out completely. I have been upcycling a lot lately and with the arrival of my gorveous new granddaughter Evalyn (more on that in another post). She is very petite but long. Her sleepsuits fit her everywhere except in length where the footpart is too tight. This is where I come in. I took sleepsuits , cut off the feet added lace or binding  and a bit of applique and these will now fit her for a few more weeks.

I own two pairs of jeans,  one a pale dark blue, one mid blue. I was bored with the lighter ones decided to do something I hadn’t done for years. Dye them.
Many moons ago I had a fabric winter coat which started off pale pink and had three reincarnations as a lilac, purple and navy. This time I bought Dylon Wash and Dye Jeans Blue. They have come out a dark blue with grey tint but I am really impressed with how the colour came out. I used one bag for two pairs of jeans. Once I have finished  the dying and washed them through as per the instructions I do a normal clothes wash with clothes in the colour family I have just dyed.

It’s finished

It’s been another busy month and I didn’t get as much sewing done as I wanted but I did manage a fair bit of knitting. I knitted a cotton vest top and vintage dress for the new baby and the big news is that I completed Eldora. I really like the patterns and love the colours I have chosen, although I wasn’t such a fan of the sewing in of the ends. For once I have a top whose length is perfect for skirts. I really like the Cotton Glace and will be using it again when I try and finish Debbie Abrahams Mystery cushion from 2012.

Decision Made

As you saw, the patterns had been shortlisted and the winner is………… drum roll please……………Eldora from Rowan Magazine 55.
I am using Rowan Cotton Glace from my stash in different colours than suggested. I chose the colours randomly by writing down how many balls I needed by letter, opened the odd ball box and took the colours out on a first come first served basis. For once I didn’t over think it and just went with the flow.
It worked I am really enjoying the way the colours are coming together.  I am finding it very addictive in the same way as cross stitch and colourwork . It’s the colour and pattern changing that inspires me and keeps me going when I should stop. One thing I hadn’t noticed before starting to knit is that it has a few rows of stranded knitting. The only slightly frustrating pattern row is where you have to wind the yarn three times per stitch, which as I’m knitting it in the round seems to take forever. A mini downside is all the ends I’ll have to sew in. The photo shows one not quite finished pattern repeat

Windswept

image

As soon as I saw this book I wanted it. Windswept is a wonderful range of patterns in a range of Rowan yarns designed by Marie Wallins.
I am lucky enough to have yarn in my stash for some of the designs but I was lacking in enough Cocoon to knit  Dill the first design of the second row. I really want to knit this so I used my initiative and  remedied the problem by swapping some Tumble from my stash for the same number of balls in Cocoon. I decided on the chocolate brown as I feel it will be more versatile.

image

I like all bar three of these designs and want to knit the stranded work dress , sweater and cardigan. I may need to buy a couple of balls but am lucky enough to have most of it in my stash. It is hard deciding what to knit and too often I end up knitting something I quite like that I can wear for work,  but don’t wear much outside. These designs I would wear every where.
