2015

Well it has been a good start to 2015 and I have managed to gift 3 refuse sacks of yarn to a new knitter. I still haven’t managed to do any sewing this year which I find extremely frustrating. I am re-evaluating things and have made a tough decision regarding my freelance work. I am now fully booked for workshops for the season which is great but on the personal knitting front I keep going wrong. I knitted most of the back of Cosy by Kim Hargreaves only to discover a dropped stitch which when I picked it up made a ridge in the fabric. I had to undo 20 cm of knitting. Thankfully I have now finished the back of this. Next to go wrong was Wee Cria by Ysolda, this time I read the pattern wrong, The sleeves were finished only to discover on rereading  the pattern I should have increase every fourth row not every alternate row. This is knitted top down so 20 rows of 4ply knitting was ripped back, This still isn’t back on track yet. My vibrant sweater is on hold as I keep going wrong on the row I am on. Work is going well and I am enjoying it.

Life is good now if I can just get some sewing done .

Collections

I confess that after my family, three huge loves in my life are fabric, yarn and stationery. I have plenty of all three but in recent years I have started to control my spending on note books with gorgeous covers. I still drool over them and if it is vastly reduced I sometimes lose all self control and purchase one. My favourite size note pad is A5 and I was not a lover of A4 until recently. Since the eighties I have owned a Filofax often buying a new personal one instead of refills when needing a new diary insert. Recently my trusty A5 Filofax gave up the fight and broke after ten years of hard work. So I went shopping for a new one. I am particular when I am choosing my Filofax. It has to have the larger rings and I prefer an elastic closure or double poppers. My decision made, I went on the search for a cerise or red Domino A5 Filofax. Now, I realise I could have ordered online and got exactly what I wanted posted to my door, but I want to support the high street and real live shops before we lose them altogether. Every Filofax stockist in Watford was searched and not one had the one I was looking for. I had almost given up and my last stop was Rymans on the parade. They didn’t have one either but what they did have at a bargain price of £25 was an A4 Filofax with an 18 month diary. I can’t resist a bargain and as I wanted to use it for pattern notes I decided to give it a try. Well I have had a complete turnaround. I love my A4 Filofax and use it daily at home. It is so versatile and I can put my patterns in it without folding them. I did manage to get my A5 one which is bursting at the seams with all my old and new pages. In my handbag I have a personal one and as a spare a pocket one. I have the whole Domino family. My stationery family is complete.

Lists

It’s that time time of year when one has to start making lists. One almost has to write a list of the lists one has to write.
This year hasn’t quite got to that stage yet but so far we have the Christmas card list and the Christmas present list. It’s too early for the Christmas food list. I also have these sewing to do list and the knitting to do list, I had got to the stage where I only had one knitting project on the go but that has gone by the wayside. On my needles at the moment are:
1-Vibrant Sweater from Vogue Knitting, I am onto the body,
2-Hogwarts Express a small shawl in worsted weight yarn
3- Lille a cardigan in 4 ply for Evalyn
4- Mystery Blanket 2014 , this strictly speaking is in hibernation but I do need to start knitting it for Evalyn.
I have written another two hat patterns Harry and Nick so have been test knitting these. I am pleased with the results.
Now we come to the sewing projects. I am so very far behind with these as I just do not have any free time to sew at the minute. The knitting gets done because it’s portable and I can knit whilst travelling.
1-numerous project pouches which are the most important to get done.
2- 2 dresses for Evalyn
3- Advent calendar for Harry and Evalyn
4- stocking for Evalyn
5-tulip dress for me
6-vintage top for me
7-sew buttons on a coat
8-shorten sleeves on a top
9-2 pairs of PJs

All of these are cut out or part sewn and need to be finished. The pouches are the most important but I may need to finish the two dresses for Evalyn before she outgrows them

Ally Pally 2014

I had hoped to go to the knitting and stitching show at Alexandra Palace but I didn’t have the time. I was mainly going to renew magazine subscriptions which I really don’t need so maybe it was just as well.
As I never made it there I decided to treat myself to a few purchases online. This year is Evalyns first Christmas so I bought a lovely Hello Kitty stocking panel and a mini stocking advent calendar panel. Square DPNs are a favourite of mine and since suffering from Tennis Elbow figured a more ergonomic shape might be beneficial, so I invested in a knit pro nova set which I will be knitting Evalyns hat on. My final purchase was the amazing new book from Kim Hargreaves Still. There are three patterns I definitely want to knit from this book and as soon as I have finished my vibrant sweater I will start one. Now I’ve made my purchases I’m glad I didn’t go as I would have spent at least four times as much on stuff I didn’t necessarily want or need. Instead I have exactly what I want and I can buy a couple more bits next month.

It’s still the same old story

As usual I have over extended myself and have dropped the ball. I need to have a good think and re-evaluate things. The vibrant sweater has been put on hold after finishing both the sleeves, as unfortunately I have a case of tennis elbow. The physio is working well but I still have to be a good patient and limit the amount of knitting or sewing I do. One doesn’t realise how much one uses these muscles until one does something and it hurts.

Sewing has been a little lax as well so next weekend I am planning to make a list of everything I need to do, both knitting and sewing and put it order of priority and pencil time to do it all in the calender. I actually think I’d get more done if I had to commute to work each day instead of my 20 minute walk.

Lovely yarn

As you will all know I love Alpaca yarns.  I am currently knitting the Vibrant Colourwork Sweater as shown in the last post and  am enjoying every stitch I am knitting.

Rowan Alpaca Colour is a real pleasure to knit with. It’s one of those yarns that just glides off the needles. I have already made one sleeve and have started the second one. The body with all its wondrous colourwork is calling me but I am remaining strong and knitting the sleeves first. I love this pattern and yarn

New Beginnings

As well as finishing lots of projects in August I joined a gym. I still can’t quite believe it but after talking about it for many years I am finally doing it. Not only have I joined, but I have used the gym and taken a class. I have discovered I am fitter than I thought I was but I cannot use a tread mill. It is rather frustrating, I mean it’s only walking. To  my surprise I am a natural on the cross trainer and bikes. I had an induction with the lovely Zoe who has given me great advice on which classes to take and how long to use each machine until I have my next session with her.  I am looking forward to using the gym at least twice a week and have my sights set on a few different classes. I am determined to keep it up.

On the crafting front I still have numerous sewing projects cut out ready to sew. I really need to get on with them or Harry and Evalyn will have outgrown them. On the knitting front I have started Hogwarts Express by Susan Ashcroft in the most gorgeous purple pink Yarn Hollow Tor Worsted Superwash, the shade name is violent violet. I do love the yarn and wanted to knit the pattern but the reason I am using the both now is because the lovely Harry did his usual of picking up the ball of wool, holding it to his face and saying ooo wool. Unfortunately he had been eating Dairylea and some got on the yarn, now even though I wiped it off I couldn’t really wash the yarn properly without it being made up. Well done Harry, good choice!

One of the projects I want to knit and have kitted up is the gorgeous Vibrant Colourwork Pullover from the new Vogue Knitting by Marie Wallin. I would really love to do it in the same colours as the pattern but I am determined not to add to my stash so am knitting it in slightly different colours. I will still be using the two main colours yellow and green, a slightly different green.

Luckily I did have the yarn except in slightly different colours. Orange will be replaced with red. I am really looking forward to knitting this in the fabulously wonderful and soft Rowan Alpaca Colour and Rowan Kid Classic. I plan on knitting this in the round up to the arms and will be knitting the arms first. I can’t wait to start knitting it

Evalyn

Evalyn blog 1It’s been a hectic month and amongst all the  things going on I was extremely lucky to become a nana again. My daughter Sarah gave birth to the mini version of her on 29th June at 09.14am. Evalyn Dorothy Frances Jones came into the world weighing a mere six pounds five ounces. She had a huge mop of dark hair and was so petite. A month on and she has started to fill out a little, She is a tiny thing but very long. Her hair is getting lighter and now she is the image of her mother when she was born. I got very emotional the first time I saw her after  she had morphed into her mother. It was so bizarre, it was as if I was holding my first baby girl all over again. She is a noisy little thing and likes to giggle and make noises when she moves in her sleep. She is a very welcome edition to the family.

Upcycling

I have always been a fan of reinventing my clothes. Now it’s called upcycling to me it’s just common sense. If you have a garment which fits you perfectly but looks a bit dated or you’re a little bored with it don’t throw it away. Update it, change it, reinvent it. My favourite jacket for over 10 years was a faded brown velvet box jacket. It fitted me perfectly had a small mandarin collar and covered buttons. I updated it every few years by changing the buttons. In its last incarnation I bought the most gorgeous mother of pearl etched buttons. Unfortunately whilst on holiday in Lisbon I left my favourite jacket in a cafe, its still my favourite.  One day I will make a replacement.  I often buy tops I like in charity shops but sometimes the sleeves are too floaty for me so I unpick the seams narrow the sleeves or take them out completely. I have been upcycling a lot lately and with the arrival of my gorveous new granddaughter Evalyn (more on that in another post). She is very petite but long. Her sleepsuits fit her everywhere except in length where the footpart is too tight. This is where I come in. I took sleepsuits , cut off the feet added lace or binding  and a bit of applique and these will now fit her for a few more weeks.

I own two pairs of jeans,  one a pale dark blue, one mid blue. I was bored with the lighter ones decided to do something I hadn’t done for years. Dye them.
Many moons ago I had a fabric winter coat which started off pale pink and had three reincarnations as a lilac, purple and navy. This time I bought Dylon Wash and Dye Jeans Blue. They have come out a dark blue with grey tint but I am really impressed with how the colour came out. I used one bag for two pairs of jeans. Once I have finished  the dying and washed them through as per the instructions I do a normal clothes wash with clothes in the colour family I have just dyed.

Decision Made

As you saw, the patterns had been shortlisted and the winner is………… drum roll please……………Eldora from Rowan Magazine 55.
I am using Rowan Cotton Glace from my stash in different colours than suggested. I chose the colours randomly by writing down how many balls I needed by letter, opened the odd ball box and took the colours out on a first come first served basis. For once I didn’t over think it and just went with the flow.
It worked I am really enjoying the way the colours are coming together.  I am finding it very addictive in the same way as cross stitch and colourwork . It’s the colour and pattern changing that inspires me and keeps me going when I should stop. One thing I hadn’t noticed before starting to knit is that it has a few rows of stranded knitting. The only slightly frustrating pattern row is where you have to wind the yarn three times per stitch, which as I’m knitting it in the round seems to take forever. A mini downside is all the ends I’ll have to sew in. The photo shows one not quite finished pattern repeat
